For the CSG Liudger in Drachten (the Netherlands), Kraaijvanger Urbis designed two high school buildings (a redevelopment and one new to be built): Splitting and Raai. Next to this Kraaijvanger Urbis also introduced a coherent structural vision for the shared school premises within the larger educatioal campus of "Leerpark Drachten".

The concept for both school buildings is based on a central space which connects the existing building with the new facility, offering a clear overview: a glazed passage in Splitting and an atrium in Raai.

Maximum flexibility in use of space, energy efficiency and sustainability were integral part of the design. The new buildings will fully support the newly introduced educational methods.

The projected building components determine the position of the school buildings on the green campus: at the head of the esplanade. By elaborating the school grounds into a green setting of lawns and trees, bordered by water, the two schools will resemble a pair of jewels in a bed of green lining. Although they belong together, the schools also remain independent of one another – connected by the greenery, but divided by the esplanade. A new through path that is situated perpendicular to the main axis ensures that local social activities have more of an impact on campus.

The project will be realised in two phases: Splititng is currently on site and will be completed mid 2012, after which construction of Raai will start (2012-2013).
