Koningshof Library, Maassluis (NL)
Hans Goverde
The Municipality of Maassluis commissioned the design of a new library as a prominent corner building to be situated on the site of the former library. The new library’s curved exterior wall presents the future urban square with an urban façade. Generous windows and gaps in walls establish interior-exterior relationships. The entrance to the building is a two-storey gateway in the zinc-clad façade.
While a monumental interior walkway acts as the main axis through the building, it is crossed by a slender aerial walkway that connects the collection rooms with the office rooms. A spatial interplay of open spaces, sightlines, large wall openings and colour provides ever-changing visual impressions.
